REF 2021: Modern languages and linguistics

York is out in front for modern languages and linguistics while Bristol and Nottingham move up

The University of York takes number one spot for modern languages and linguistics in our GPA rankings, rising from joint 11th place in the 2014 exercise: its average score of 3.65 is based on 19 full-time equivalent (FTE) researchers entered, meaning it ranks 28th on research power.

Other significant movers include fourth-placed University of Bristol, up from 31st last time, and the University of Nottingham, which rises to sixth in 2022 after finishing 27th in 2014.

The University of Cambridge, which entered 115 FTE researchers in this area, leads the way for research power but is ranked 13th in terms of GPA, while the University of Oxford’s modern languages submission is second placed in terms of research power but 23rd on GPA scores.

At a national level the Modern Languages and Linguistics UoA has a GPA of 3.21, with 41 per cent of its submission rated 4*. 1614.50 FTE staff were submitted to this UoA.
