Oxbridge science is on top of the world

The world's top science universities are in England, according to a global sample of research-active science academics carried out for The Times Higher .

For the second year running, Cambridge and Oxford universities have come first and second respectively in our peer review of the top institutions for science.

The review puts six US universities in the top ten, with the University of California at Berkeley in third place, while Harvard University slips to fourth. Imperial College London is in tenth place.

The data are the first part of The Times Higher World University Rankings 2005, which will appear throughout October.

The top universities for technology are led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Berkeley, followed by the Indian Institutes of Technology.
