Sir Brian Follett, vice-chancellor of Warwick University, has been appointed non-executive chairman of the Arts and Humanities Research Board, and David Eastwood, pro vice-chancellor and chair of modern history at the University of Wales Swansea, has been appointed chief executive. They will succeed Paul Langford, chairman and chief executive, in October. Professor Langford is to become rector of Lincoln College, Oxford.

Philip Gummett, pro vice-chancellor at the University of Manchester, has been appointed head of the higher education division at the Welsh Funding Councils. He succeeds Rowland Wynne.

Colin Bell, vice-chancellor of the University of Bradford, has been appointed chair of the quality assessment committee of the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Sir Richard Sykes, executive chairman of Glaxo Wellcome, has been appointed rector of Imperial College.

Thomas Swan, chairman and managing director of the chemical company Thomas Swan and Co and special professor for business and industrial chemistry at Nottingham University, has been invested as world president of the Society of Chemical Industry. He succeeds Vincent Calarco.

The University of Manchester has appointed: Patricia Price, reader in clinical oncology at Imperial, Ralston Paterson professor of radiation oncology from September; Linda Thompson, senior lecturer in education at the University of Durham, professor of education from December; Thomas Gibbons, senior lecturer in law at Manchester, professor of law; Neville Harris, professor of law at Liverpool John Moores University, professor of law from September; and Andrew Sanders, professor of criminal law and criminology at the University of Bristol, professor of criminal law and criminology from August.

David Gillborn, head of policy studies at the Institute of Education, has been invited to join the Association of London Government's Commission on Race and Education in London.

Ann Robinson, director general of the National Association of Pension Funds, has been appointed the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators' visiting professor of corporate governance at Bournemouth University, where she will help launch the European Centre for Corporate Governance.
