Adrian Webb, vice-chancellor of the University of Glamorgan, became chairman of the Heads of Higher Education in Wales this week following the early retirement of John O. Williams. He also becomes vice-president, representing Wales, of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals. He will hold the HHEW post until 2002.

Pamela Taylor, vice-principal of Newman College of Higher Education, has been appointed principal. She will take up the post in September on the retirement of Brian Ray.

The University of Bristol has appointed Lesley Sharpe, who holds a chair in German at the University of Exeter, to a chair in German from September; Gillian Clark, senior lecturer at the University of Liverpool, to a chair in ancient history from July; Francis Rose, former professor of commercial and common law at the University of Buckingham, to a chair in law from last month; Karl Karsh, former professor of cardiology at the Eberhard-Karls-University of Tubingen, to a professorship of cardiology since last November; Andrew Dick, senior lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Aberdeen, to a professorship of ophthalmology from March; Christopher Hawkesworth, who held a chair at the Open University, to a chair in earth sciences from this month; David Punter, professor in the department of English studies at the University of Stirling, to a chair in English from August.

David Jones, former reader in biological sciences at the University of Warwick, has joined Brunel University with a chair in bioinformatics. Nick Kaye, former senior lecturer in theatre studies at Warwick, has joined the University of Manchester as professor of drama.

Mike Bruton, former human resources manager at the Institution of Civil Engineers, has been appointed director of the ICE's new membership and human resources division.
