Five reappointments have been made to the Education Funding Council for Wales to ensure the council has stability during its transition to the National Assembly of Wales.
Asked in the House of Commons how many of the reappointments were resident in Wales, Peter Hain, Welsh Office Minister, said Brynley Roberts, former chief librarian of the National Library of Wales, and Brian Clarkson, former principal of the University of Wales, Swansea and vice-chancellor of the University of Wales, both live there.
The chairman, Sir Philip Jones, former chairman of Total Oil Marine plc and Total Oil holdings, was educated at Cowbridge Grammar School in Wales, and Kenneth Gray, chairman of the intellectual property development company Scipher plc, attended the University of Wales, Bangor.
The fifth member is Alfred Morris, vice-chancellor of the University of the West of England and a member of the Further Education Funding Council for England.
Peter Rigby, head of the eukaryotic molecular genetics division at the Medical Research Council's National Institute for Medical Research, has been appointed chief executive of the Institute of Cancer Research from February 1. Dr Rigby replaces Peter Garland, who retires this month.
Dr Rigby's research team will eventually move to join him at the institute.
Clive Jones, chief executive at Carlton Television, is to become governor of the board of the National Film and Television School. He replaces retiring governor Andy Allan from November this year.
Pamela Castle, a partner and head of environmental law at solicitors firm Cameron McKenna, has been appointed to the Natural Environment Research Council from August this year. She replaces Yvonne Barton and will serve until July 2001.
Margaret Harris, former acting director of the centre for voluntary organisation at the London School of Economics, has joined Aston Business School as professor of voluntary sector organisation in the public sector management group.
The University of Sussex has promoted Edward Tapper, reader in politics, and Samuel Abraham, reader in social psychology, to professorships.
Mike Donnelly, head of the school of operations management at Bristol business school, part of the University of the West of England, has become head of the department of management and marketing at the University of Paisley.
Mr Donnelly is a former general election campaign manager for the Scottish Labour Party.
At Sheffield Hallam University, professorships have been awarded to: Philip Harris in the school of financial studies and law; Robert Miles, cultural studies; Nigel Mortimer, urban and regional studies; Ian Robinson, engineering; and Michael Worboys, cultural studies.
Nene University College Northampton has awarded professorships to Reva Brown in management and Phil Picton in intelligent computer systems.
