Roderick Floud, 56, provost of London Guildhall University, has been elected as a vice-chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals. He will be one of three vice-chairmen, with Sir John Arbuthnot, principal of Strathclyde University, and Howard Newby, vice-chancellor of Southampton University, already elected. Election of the chairman is postponed until a review of the CVCP is completed.

Peter Fidler, 51, deputy vice-chancellor and deputy chief executive of Oxford Brookes University, has been appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Sunderland. He succeeds Anne Wright, chief executive of the University for Industry.

Patrick Bateson, 60, professor of ethnology at the University of Cambridge, provost of King's College, Cambridge, and vice-chairman of the Museums and Galleries Commission will be biological secretary of the Royal Society for the next five years.

Peter West, secretary of the University of Strathclyde, has been elected president of the directing group of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's higher education management programme. He succeeds the late rector of the University of Amsterdam, Jan-Karl Gevers.

Gill Tucker, head of learning and teaching at Oxford Brookes University, joins the University of East London as pro-vice-chancellor in January.
