Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has ordered the deployment of security agents to all 30 federal universities after two lecturers and 20 students died in fighting between predominantly Christian and Islamic factions that spilled onto the campus of the University of Jos.

Faculty unions and associations in the United States and Canada have designated October 28 to November 3 Campus Equity Week as part of an international campaign to improve pay and working conditions of part-time and non-tenure-track faculty.

Chinese universities are developing "work-for-study" schemes to allow students, rather than their parents, to pay rising tuition fees.

Opposition leaders in the Czech Republic have called for the resignation or dismissal of education minister Eduard Zeman after a promised increase of Kcs2 billion (£38 million) in the 2002 budget failed to materialise.

Australia has called for fewer restrictions on the ability of education organisations and professionals to work overseas in a proposal to the World Trade Organisation services round. It believes that these comprise a restriction on the development of an international market in education services.

Rio de Janeiro
Public universities in the state of Rio de Janeiro will reserve 40 per cent of places for black and mulatto students. Earlier this year, the state assembly agreed to allocate half of places at state universities to students from public schools. Both plans should come into force next year.

President George W. Bush is to nominate Sally Stroup as assistant secretary for postsecondary education, the leading policy-maker on higher education issues. Ms Stroup is a former Republican Congressional aide and is chief Washington lobbyist for the University of Phoenix.

Bahraini premier Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has allocated BD12 million (£23 million) for a new science faculty at the University of Bahrain's Sakhir campus, renovations to the Isa Town campus and two higher education colleges.

Columbia University has named Lee Bollinger, president of the University of Michigan, its next president.
