About the University of Jos
Basic information and contact details for the University of Jos
Established in 1975, the University of Jos now educates over 40,000 students and is located in the Nigerian city of Jos. Upon its inception in 1971, the university was a campus of the University of Ibadan, and it was in 1975 that the military government announced the establishment of new universities, which is how the University of Jos was formed.
Accepting both undergraduate and postgraduate students, the university has seven schools and 12 faculties located on one campus, including: agriculture, arts, health sciences, education, engineering, environmental sciences, law, management sciences, natural sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, social sciences, and veterinary medicine.
Across its wide range of faculties, the university prides itself on a student to faculty ratio of 5:1, meaning students learn in small groups to get the most out of their classes. Veterinary students also benefit from practical training in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital which houses animal clinics, avian and aquatic clinics, and diagnostic laboratories.
There are 15 student accommodation buildings, over 100 student groups, and over 11,000 students living on campus. One on-campus accommodation building is designated for postgraduate students who might wish for a quieter environment. Most students use a bicycle to get around campus, but there is a free shuttle and car sharing options available. During their free time, students can choose to join one of the university’s six varsity sports clubs, 32 club sports associations, and recreation facilities.
