Medieval francophone literary culture outside France
French was widely used as an international language in the Middle Ages, but most scholarship has focused on France. This project will map the dissemination of manuscripts of influential medieval francophone literary texts across Europe and beyond. Researchers from the University of Cambridge, University College London and King's College London hope to reassess the relation between language, identity and culture in the era, thereby questioning modern histories of the origin of national languages and literatures.
