Pregnancy complications: understanding energy supply from the placenta
Some 60,000 babies a year in the UK suffer from fetal growth restriction. With preliminary evidence highlighting the importance of the mitochondria in providing energy for the placenta, this project will study the effect of fluctuating oxygen supplies on mitochondria. It is hoped that investigations will lead to new ways to undertake early screening for the condition, including blood tests.
