The Institution of Chemical Engineers has presented the Brennan Medal to Frank Crawley , of the University of Strathclyde, for his book on best practice for the process and chemical industries.

Mike Danson , of the University of Paisley, has been elected to the Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences .

Matthew Freeman , group leader at the Medical Research Council's Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, has won the European Molecular Biology Organisation 's gold medal for his contributions to cell signalling in developmental biology.

The Theophilus Redwood lectureship of the Royal Society of Chemistry has been awarded to David Littlejohn , professor of pure and applied chemistry at the University of Strathclyde.

Michael Pacione , professor of geography at Strathclyde, has been appointed to membership of the Academic Panel by the Scottish Executive .

James Parratt , emeritus professor of physiology and pharmacology at Strathclyde, has been made an honorary citizen of the City of Winnipeg and elected a founding fellow of the International Society for Heart Research .

Mark Wilson Jones , of the University of Bath, has won the Royal Institute of British Architects 's Sir Banister Fletcher award for his book Principles of Roman Architecture .

The Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine has awarded senior research fellowships in biomedicine to: Hilar Ashe , school of biological sciences at the University of Manchester; Dawn Coverley , University of York and Wellcome/Cancer Research Campaign Institute, University of Cambridge; Dino Giussani , department of physiology, University of Cambridge; Cathy Tournier , school of biological sciences, University of Manchester; and Alan Whitmarsh , school of biological sciences, University of Manchester.

Lord Sutherland, principal of the University of Edinburgh, will present the James Tait Memorial Prize to Martin Amis , who won the biography category for Experience , and Zadie Smith , who won the fiction category for White Teeth .
