King's College London has awarded honorary fellowships to: The Duke of Wellington, descendant of a college founder; Lady Wolfson, trustee of the Wolfson Foundation; and Jose Blanco, trustee and executive director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Elected fellowships go to: Frank Ashley, dean of the college's dental institute; Sir Norman Browse, professor of surgery and a consulting surgeon at St Thomas's Hospital; Thelma Fisher, leading authority on family mediation; Malcolm Godfrey, former dean of the medical school at Hammersmith Hospital; Lady Mayhew, former member of college council; Robin Morse, head of the college's school of law

Michael Redhead, chair in history and philosophy of science at Cambridge University; Eric Scowen, King's Centre of Medical Law and Ethics advisory board; Ellen Solomon, head of the division of medical and molecular genetics in the Guy's, King's and St Thomas's School of Medicine at King's; and Stuart Checkley, dean of King's institute of psychiatry.

The University of Southampton has awarded honorary degrees to: Evelyn Glennie, percussionist; Sir George Alberti, president, Royal College of Physicians and professor of medicine, the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne; John Knowles, founder of the Marwell Zoological Park; Brian Jones, one of the two-man crew of the Breitling Orbiter 3

Thomas Schreckenbach, instrumental in the strong relationship between Merck R&D UK and the university; Adrian Newey, director of engineering for MacLaren International; Anthony Mingella, writer and Oscar-winning director; Abdulla Wali Nasher, minister for health for Yemen; Sir Anthony Tennant, senior adviser, Morgan Stanley UK Group; and Hilary Ockenden, director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial Applied Mathematics.

The University of Sunderland has awarded an academic honour to Sir Stirling Moss.

The Royal Academy of Music has awarded honorary membership to: Django Bates, jazz musician; David Cairns, critic; Valery Gergiev, conductor and Gundula Janowitz, soprano.
