London School of Economics and Political Science

The following were elected as honorary fellows of the school: Pat Barker, author and winner of the Booker Prize for Fiction; Nicholas Garganas, deputy governor of the Bank of Greece; Rosalyn Higgins, judge at the International Court of Justice; Navinchandra Ramgoolam, prime minister of Mauritius; Adam Roberts, Montague Burton professor of international relations and fellow of Balliol College, Oxford; Stephen Wheatcroft, director of Aviation and Tourism Int Ltd.

Royal Northern College of Music

Fellowships were conferred on: Malcolm Arnold, composer; Trevor Green, director of the Australian National Academy of Music and former head of music at BBC North; Stefan Janski, head of opera studies and Renna Kellaway, head of keyboard studies at the college.

Honorary memberships:

Hilary Groves, chairman of the RNCM Association of Friends; Sebastian Ferranti, independent member of the RNCM Board of Governors and former chairman of the Halle Concerts Society.

Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine Fellowships were conferred on: Patrick Dowling, vice-chancellor and chief executive of the University of Surrey; Brian Fender, chief executive, Higher Education Funding Council; Robert May, chief scientific adviser to the government and head of the Office of Science and Technology; Joseph Pillay, high commissioner for the Republic of Singapore; Sanker Sen, minister in charge of power, science and technology and non-conventional energy sources to the government of West Bengal.

Peter Williams, chief executive of Oxford Instruments, was elected to the fellowship in 1996 but was formally admitted at the 1997 ceremony.
