Boozy students are damaging not only their health but also their academic performance by drinking too much alcohol.
Researchers at Edge Hill University who studied a sample of 46 second-year students found that entrance qualifications and IQ predicted only 2 per cent of the variation in a student's course marks. When measures of alcohol intake and other drug consumption were also considered, the researchers could predict 25 per cent of the variation. Philip Murphy, a reader in psychology, called the findings "remarkable", but said: "Our data does not allow us to say whether the findings are due to the effect of alcohol on the brain or to the lifestyle factors associated with heavier alcohol use that may get in the way of studying."
