Peter Goddard , master of St John's College, Cambridge and professor of theoretical physics, has been appointed director of the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Princeton, from January.

The Arts and Humanities Research Board has appointed two programme directors: David Robey , professor in Italian and modern languages at the University of Manchester, director for information and communication technologies in arts and humanities; and Nigel Llewellyn , professor of history of art and pro vice-chancellor at the University of Sussex, director of the board's research centres scheme.

The University of Dundee has appointed: Chim Lang , formerly at the University of Malays to the chair of cardiology; Peter Stonebridge , consultant vascular surgeon and honorary senior lecturer, to the chair of vascular surgery; Peter Mossey , reader in orthodontics, to the personal chair of craniofacial development and dentofacial orthopaedics; and Gareth Fisher , senior lecturer, to the chair of fine art.

Brian Atkin , former head of the School of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Nottingham, will succeed Brian Clayton, as vice-president of Nottingham's Malaysia Campus.

Tom Hoehn , partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers' valuation and strategy practice, has been appointed visiting professor and director of the executive MBA programme at Imperial College London Business School.

Judith Elkin , professor and dean of the faculty of computing information and English at the University of Central England, has been appointed vice-principal of University College Worcester.
