Ian Diamond has been appointed chief executive of the Economic and Social Research Council. Professor Diamond is currently deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton.

Graham Durant has been named director of the National Science and Technology Centre, Questacon, Australia. Professor Durant is deputy director of the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow.

Bob Hepple , Queen’s counsel, master of Clare College, Cambridge, and emeritus professor of law, has been appointed chairman of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.  

Michael Clarke , former chief executive of the Local Government Management Board, currently professor and head of public policy at the University of Birmingham, will succeed David Westbury as Birmingham’s vice-principal.  

Numan Azmi has been appointed a member of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Ethnic Minority Business Forum. He is currently skills manager for the William Lee Innovation Centre at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.  

The PPP Foundation has appointed Anthony Holland , professor at the University of Cambridge, to the foundation chair in learning disabilities.

The Cancer Research UK department of epidemiology, mathematics and statistics has moved to Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine. Head of unit will be Jack Cuzick , professor and researcher in clinical trials, epidemiology and statistical methodology. Other members will include Peter Sasieni and Stephen Duffy .
