QUEEN MARY AND WESTFIELD COLLEGE LONDON. P. W. A. Hamilton, professor at the University of Southampton, has been appointed to the chair of English; Edmund Robinson, reader at the University of Sussex, to the chair of computer science; Paul Glendinning, assistant director of research at the University of Cambridge, to the chair of applied mathematics; Michael Moriarty, lecturer and fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, to the chair of French literature and thought;

Nigel Spence, Cassel reader at the London School of Economics, to the chair of human geography; Peter Evans, professor at the University of Nottingham, to the chair of Hispanic studies; Leonard Olschner, associate professor at Cornell University, to the chair of German; Christopher Lawn, head of advanced engineering at Rolls Royce plc, to the chair of thermo-fluids engineering;

Michael Gaster, Francis Mond professor at the University of Cambridge, as a research professor in the department of engineering.

The following have been awarded the title of professor: B. C. Carr, reader in mathematics and astronomy; C. M. Hull, reader in theoretical physics; S. D. McConville, professorial research fellow, professor of criminal justice; J. Micklewright, reader in economics.

UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL

Michel Van den Berg, professor at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, has been appointed to the chair in pure mathematics.

EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART

Chairs have been awarded to the following: Cliff Hague, head of the school of planning and housing; Moira Munrow, deputy director of the centre for housing research at Glasgow University.
