Standing Conference of Principals. Norman Taylor, director of the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, committee member of the Council for National Academic Awards, the National Advisory Body for Art and Design, the Warnock inquiry into the quality of higher education teaching and past chairman of the Conference for Higher Education in Art and Design has been appointed chairman.

The London Institute

Miriam David, professor of social sciences and founding director of the social sciences research centre at South Bank University, has been appointed the institute's first dean of research; Sally Feldman, editor and director of BBC programmes, has been apointed dean of the school of media at the London College of Printing and Distributive Trades; Chris Wainwright, head of fine art at Nottingham Trent University has been appointed dean of art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

University of Wales, Cardiff Cardiff Business School

Senior research fellowships: Pierre Berthon, formerly at Henley Management College and Columbia University Business School in New York; Jim Steely, formerly at the Bank of England.

Distinguished research fellows: John Doyle, University of Bath Management School: Jon Morris, University of Glamorgan; Peter Turnbull, former reader in industrial relations at the University of Leeds. Brian Morgan, former chief economist at the Welsh Development Agency, director of the small firms research unit.

British Institute of Learning Disabilities

Oliver Russell has been appointed chairman. He was formerly reader in mental health at Bristol University, director of the Norah Fry Research Centre and honorary consultant to the Phoenix NHS Trust. He will succeed Peter Mittler.

Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council

Ian Halliday, former professor at the University of Wales, Swansea, has been appointed chief executive, succeeding Ken Pounds next April 1.

Nuffield Institute for Health

Gerald Wistow, professor of health and social care and founder of the community care division, succeeded David Hunter on August 1 as director of the Nuffield Institute for Health at the University of Leeds.
