The flagship conference, which brings together senior university, government and industry leaders in one of the most prestigious gatherings in the world, will take place from 26 to 28 September 2016 and will be on the theme  “World Class Universities and the Public Good”.

Nicholas Dirks, chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, which is ranked among the top 15 institutions in the world, said: “Now, more than ever, the progress we make in confronting salient global challenges and opportunities will depend on the ability of universities around the world to collaborate, coordinate and share knowledge. For that reason we, at Berkeley, are thrilled to be hosting the 2016 World Academic Summit.

“We look forward to welcoming a large and diverse group of leaders in higher education, as I believe that my university has much to offer, and much to learn on this front.

“As I noted during the recent summit in Melbourne, the future career of world-class universities requires not only new kinds of relationships between the private and the public, but across national boundaries, as we forge global solutions for global problems, and gain the support necessary to sustain our great public universities in the years and decades ahead.”

Alongside Professor Dirks, confirmed speakers for the event include Tan Chorh Chuan, president of the National University of Singapore, Asia’s number one university; Peter Mathieson, president of the University of Hong Kong; and Anthony Monaco, president of Tufts University.

Editor of the THE World University Rankings, Phil Baty, said the world summit series was going “from strength to strength – bringing together thought leaders from all corners of the world to share best practice and confront some of the most pressing challenges of our time”.

“Its lasting legacy will be to provide practical, actionable, ideas to ensure we continue to nurture and develop world-class education and research, but also to create lasting human networks and personal bonds across countries and cultures,” he added. “I am absolutely thrilled that UC Berkeley will be helping us to build and sustain this exciting momentum by hosting the 2016 summit.”

More programme details and speakers are due to be announced shortly.
