World University Rankings 2020 by subject: arts and humanities

The 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings table for arts and humanities subjects uses the same trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

This ranking highlights the universities that are leading across art, performing arts, design, languages, linguistics, literature, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology subjects.

This year’s table includes 536 universities, up from 506 last year.

Stanford University tops the table once again, while the University of Cambridge climbs two places to second this year, displacing the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which finishes fourth. The University of Oxford remains in third place, while Harvard University rounds out the top five.

No Asian universities appear in the top 20, but China now has three institutions in the top 100 for the first time, led by Peking University in 23rd place. Overall, eight Asian universities are ranked in the top 100.

Germany’s LMU Munich and Humboldt University of Berlin, Canada’s University of Toronto, and France’s Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris are the only institutions outside the UK and US to make the top 20.
