Higher education leaders reflect on the challenges universities face during times of national conflict

Leaders from Colombia, Qatar, Kurdistan, South Africa, Russia and Palestine discussed how institutions can serve a country in conflict during “Presidents’ forum on resilience: university leaders responding to adversity” at the Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Summit 2019.

Chaired by THE’s editor John Gill, the panel included Dlawer Abdul-Aziz Ala'Aldeen, president of the Middle East Research Institute; Mirvat Bulbul, vice-president for administrative and financial affairs at Birzeit University; Hassan Al-Derham, president of Qatar University; Marta Losada Falk, president emeritus of Antonio Nariño University; Tshilidzi Marwala, vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Johannesburg; and Konstantin Miniar-Beloruchev, vice-rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
