* Kingston University has appointed Donald Beaton , former human resources director at Warwick University, as university secretary and secretary to the governing body.

* Chung Qing Li , senior lecturer at Dundee University, has been appointed the first Atkins professor of civil engineering at Greenwich University.

* David Rayson , an artist and guest lecturer at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, will succeed Graham Crowley as professor and head of the department of painting at the Royal College of Art.

* Hans Stofer , subject leader in silversmithing and metalwork at the University of the Arts, formerly at Middlesex University, has been appointed professor and head of the department of goldsmithing, silversmithing, metalwork and jewellery. He was previously associate lecturer in applied arts at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

* Courtauld Institute of Art has appointed Maureen Cross as lecturer in the department of conservation and technology; she was formerly textile conservation assistant at the Smithsonian Institution.

* Michael Gunn , dean of Nottingham Trent University's law school, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor for learning, teaching and scholarship at Derby University.
