* Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, has appointed Alan Gilloran , currently dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, to the post of vice-principal (research and development) and Richard Kerley , currently dean of the faculty of business and arts, to the post of vice-principal (international strategy and commercialisation).

* The University of Wales has announced Barry Morgan , the Archbishop of Wales, as its new pro-chancellor.

* Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen has appointed Shona Cormack , chief executive and board member of Scottish Enterprise Tayside, vice-principal and pro vice-chancellor (student experience and external relations).

* Michael Thomas , professor and associate dean of the School of Health and Human Sciences at Leeds Metropolitan University, has been appointed dean of the School of Health and Social Care at Chester University.

* Alasdair Tair , cellist and professor at the Aldeburgh International String Quartet Academy and visiting professor at the Britten Pears School, has been appointed assistant director of chamber music at the Royal Northern College of Music.

* Inspire, the national library partnership and access programme, has appointed Philip Payne , librarian of Birkbeck, University of London, co-director from September 1.

* Oxford University has appointed Mike Nicholson , head of undergraduate recruitment and admissions at the University of Essex, director of undergraduate admissions.
