Sir Michael Berry , professor of physics at the University of Bristol, has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Ulm, Germany .

The American Psychological Association has presented the 2001 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award to Alan Baddeley , professor of psychology at the University of Bristol.

Chunli Bai , vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was today awarded the 2001 Society of Chemical Industry international medal.

Patrick Dowling , vice-chancellor of the University of Surrey, has been elected a foreign member of Argentina's National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and its National Academy of Engineering .

The European Committee for Future Accelerators has elected Brian Foster , professor of physics at the University of Bristol, as its chairman.

Laura Machesky , a senior research fellow from the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham, has won the career recognition award bestowed by the women in cell biology committee of the American Society for Cell Biology .
