Honorary fellowships: Basil Davidson, historian and author, senior research fellow at the University of Manchester, visiting professorship at the universities of Ghana, California and Edinburgh, honorary fellow of the Centre of West African Studies at the University of Birmingham, awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ibadan; Armartya Sen, economist, master of Trinity College, Cambridge, former professor of economics at Jadavpur University, London School of Economics, Oxford and Harvard universities.

Honorary fellowships: Suri Krishnamma, film-maker; Nick Knight, fashion photographer; John Millward, general practitioner, local politician, governor of the college.

King's College, London

The following were elected fellows: Harrison Birtwistle, composer and Henry Purcell professor of composition; Denys Brunsden, emeritus professor of physical geography; Cyril Chantler, vice-principal designate of the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals; John Elliott, regius professor emeritus of modern history, Oxford University; Peter Higgs, emeritus professor of theoretical physics, University of Edinburgh; Alex Inglis, dean of the faculty of clinical dentistry; Patricia Methven, archivist at the college; David Penry-Davey, High Court judge; Michael Rutter, professor of child psychiatry, honorary director of the Medical Research Council's child psychiatric unit, director of the social, genetic and developmental psychiatry research centre at the college; Anthea Tinker, professor of social gerontology and director of the Age Concern institute.
