Church of Scotland. Alan Main, professor of practical theology at Christ's College in Aberdeen and former university chaplain, has been appointed moderator of the General Assembly from 1998.

Southampton Institute

Trevor Cooper, formerly at Nottingham Trent University, has been appointed student affairs manager. Mike Biles, head of applied law, has been appointed honorary member of the Institute of Rent Officers and Rental Valuers.

University of Southampton

Russell Jones, former director of the careers advisory service at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, has been appointed director of the careers advisory service; John Montague-Lock, former senior lecturer in counselling psychotherapy at Salisbury College, has been appointed head of the counselling service.

Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh

Geoffrey King, former director of corporate services and projects at the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency who has also worked for the National Rivers Authority and Thames Water Authority, has been appointed vice principal (resource planning and development).

University of Greenwich

Sarah Palmer, head of the department of history at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, has been appointed founding director of the Greenwich Maritime Institute from October 1998.
