University of Wales, Lampeter

Dan Cohn Sherbok, rabbi, formerly at the University of Kent at Canterbury, has been appointed to a chair in Judaism.

University of East London

The following chairs have been awarded in the business school: Kazem Chaharbaghi, subject group leader in strategic and international management, professor of management and head of research; Peter Woolliams, reader, professor in business information systems.

Goldsmiths University of London

Simon McVeigh, senior lecturer, has been appointed professor of music and head of department.Gresham College Richard Holloway, bishop of Edinburgh and primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, will succeed John Bowker as professor of divinity from September 1997.

Royal Holloway, London

Kiernan Ryan, fellow and director of studies in English, University of Cambridge, has been appointed professor of English language and literature.

Lancaster University

Personal chairs have been awarded to: Ian Nieduszynski, reader, chair in connective tissue biochemistry; Colin Pooley, senior lecturer, chair in social and historical geography; Mick Dillon, senior lecturer, chair in politics.
