Michael Davies, geotechnical engineer and founder of the geotechnical centrifuge research centre at the University of Wales, Cardiff, has been appointed professor of civil engineering.

The following become professors in the department of geography: Giles Foody, formerly at the Telford Institute of Environmental Systems; Adam Tickell, formerly at the University of Manchester. Peter Friedman, former head of the department of medicine at Liverpool University, professor of dermatology. Victor Snaith, faculty of mathematics.

Personal chairs have been conferred on: David Coggon, MRC environmental epidemiology unit; Colin Mason, geography; Freda Stevenson, medicine; Andrew Renwick, clinical pharmacology.
