Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

The president of the board of trade has appointed the following to serve on the council: Wendy Hall, professor of computer science in the department of electronics and computer science at the University of Southampton

Bevan Braithwaite, chief executive of TWI (the Welding Institute); John Ball, Sedleian professor of natural philosophy at the University of Oxford's mathematics institute; David Giachardi, director of research for Courtaulds plc; Julia Higgins, professor of polymer science and dean of City and Guilds College at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London; Brian Johnson, professor of chemistry at the University of Cambridge; David Smith, chief executive officer and director of research and development of Watman plc, chair of the LINK Board.

Royal College of Art

The following have been appointed to the college's council: Idris Pearce, consultant to Richard Ellis Chartered Surveyors and International Property Consultants; and Maurice Saatchi, founder of Saatchi and Saatchi Advertising, trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum and governor of the London School of Economics.

University of Newcastle

Thomas Graham, formerly head of reader services at Aberdeen University Library, deputy librarian at Hull University and librarian at York University, has been appointed librarian and keeper of the Pybus Collection from April 9.

University of Wolverhampton

The following have been elected to the board of governors: John Sharples and Simon Murphy, Labour member of the European parliament.
