Tim Collins (pictured), Wolverhampton University's new associate dean (postgraduate, research and enterprise), is full of praise for his new home and the people who work there.
"There is a much broader range of people, politics, interests and cultural backgrounds here," said the former sculptor from the Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
"We have some amazing people in art and design who you'd be very unlikely to assemble in a single faculty in the US."
The UK's investment in art and design research was on a scale relatively unheard of elsewhere, he said.
"It's a very exciting time and place to be here. There's lots of potential.
"Wolverhampton does not have the hyper-stimulated economy of New York or London, so there is a whole range of environmental, social and economic issues that are really fascinating."

Kelvin Chan joins as head of the new pharmacy department from the Institute for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine, Baptist University, Hong Kong.
Sally Glen joins as pro vice-chancellor (academic) in September from the Institute of Health Sciences, City University.
Paul Travill , director of registry services at Napier University, will become academic registrar.

Roy Newton , pro vice-chancellor (strategic planning and resources), retires at the end of August.
Mary Heaney , director of learning centres, joins Manchester Metropolitan University as director of services.
Antonia Payne , associate dean of art and design, has moved to become dean of research at Dartington College of Arts.
Hilary Grainger , associate dean of art and design, is now the London College of Fashion's dean of quality assurance and academic development.
