WEST OF ENGLAND

Photographer and legal expert Blu Tirohl (pictured) has been lured back to the UK from Sweden to establish a photography degree at the Bristol School of Art, Media and Design (AMD) at the University of the West of England.

"My job is turning out to be challenging and interesting," she said.

Dr Tirohl, a former regional representative of lecturers' union Natfhe, has sat on employment tribunals for several years and has recently completed a postgraduate diploma in law from Nottingham Trent University.

She is studying the impact of early 20th-century forensic photography on film noir, particularly images of crime scenes by the New York photographer Weegee. Her photographs have been exhibited regularly in the UK and abroad.

Professor of European studies Ullrich Kockel has become professor of ethnology and folk life at the Academy for Irish Cultural Heritages at Ulster University.

Stephen Hoddell , who worked at UWE for more than 22 years, has taken early retirement.
