Vince Ramprogus

Job advertised in The Times Higher , September 19 2003
Dean (Pro-Vice-Chancellor) of the Faculty of Community Studies and Education

The faculty of health, social care and education at Manchester Metropolitan University is huge. With 6,500 students, it is the largest faculty in the UK's largest university.

It was the size of the faculty, and the opportunities it offered for interprofessional education, that attracted Vince Ramprogus. He joined MMU in January as head of faculty and pro vice-chancellor, having been at Northumbria University for six years.

"The government's agenda is very much to ensure that public-service workers such as teachers, nurses, social workers and other health workers can work together in multidisciplinary teams.

"This is what I want to ensure at Manchester Metropolitan. It is not just about students sharing classrooms or courses, it is about learning how different professions meet the different needs of patients," he says.

Ramprogus' background is in nursing and academia. The School of Nursing and Allied Health at Northumbria underwent three restructurings under his leadership, to become the best provider in the UK, as rated in The Guardian and The Times .

He oversaw the move of North Staffordshire College from the National Health Service to Keele University.

Ramprogus is originally from Mauritius and began his studies at what was then Manchester Polytechnic, completing a clinical course in psychiatric nursing and a PhD in professional nursing education.

After training at Withington Hospital, Manchester, he spent 14 years in the NHS, as a charge nurse, working in alcohol, drug and mental health clinics.
