Graeme Davies named as next London v-c
Sir Graeme Davies, vice-chancellor of the University of Glasgow, is to become vice-chancellor of the University of London when Graham Zellick completes his six-year term of office in September 2003. Sir Graeme, aged 65, a New Zealander and a metallurgist, has also been vice-chancellor of Liverpool University and chief executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. He will serve for four years.

Teacher training applications up 10% on 2001
The number of people applying to train as teachers in England was up more than 10 per cent in June compared with a year ago, official figures show. However, applications to teach foreign languages dropped sharply, suggesting graduates may have been put off by the government's decision to scrap French and German as compulsory subjects for 11 to 14-year-olds.

Football manager receives honorary degree
Football manager Gerard Houllier will receive an honorary degree today from the University of Liverpool. The Liverpool Football Club boss, a Frenchman who needed life-saving heart surgery after suffering chest pains during a match against Leeds last October, is being made a doctor of laws. He wil collect his degree alongside Liverpool-born newsreader Peter Sissons.

Too many teachers teach non-subject classes
A "disturbing" report showing how many secondary school teachers are taking classes in subjects they are not properly qualified to teach was published today. The Liberal Democrats with headteacher organisations commissioned the research from John Howson of Oxford Brookes University.

Bio sciences open day at Southampton
The University of Southampton's school of biological sciences is holding an open day on Saturday. Visitors will be able to take part in a variety of exhibitions ranging from lie detectors to learning about the brain.
