Clarke delivers cash-for-reforms message to FE
Education secretary Charles Clarke was today bringing the government's cash-for-reforms message to further education colleges. They must do better in return for the extra £1.2 billion earmarked for the sector over the next three years, he was expected to tell their annual conference in Birmingham.
Herts awards Brian May honorary degree
Queen guitarist and amateur astronomer Brian May was being awarded an honorary degree by the University of Hertfordshire today. May was working on a PhD in astronomy at Imperial College when his rock career took off.
Labour peer puts pressure on government over fees
The government came under renewed pressure over "top-up" fees in the House of Lords yesterday. Labour's Professor Lord Morgan said many universities, including Cambridge and those in Scotland, opposed top-up fees. He hailed Scotland's "much fairer" system of a means-tested graduate tax.
Man charged over Manchester student murder
A man was appearing in court today charged with the murder of a Manchester University student. Danny Davies, a first-year architecture student, was attacked in the street during a night out in the city on November 2 and died three days later. Christopher Kelly, 24, from St Johns Street, Pendlebury, Greater Manchester, who was arrested and charged yesterday, was appearing before Manchester City magistrates.
Flagship inner-city college excludes pupils
A flagship £6 million college built to replace four failing inner-city schools and herald a new era of education for youngsters, has excluded more than 100 pupils since opening two months ago. All Saints College opened in September in a pioneering partnership between Newcastle City Council, Newcastle University and the Church of England.
International enrolments at US universities rise
Enrolment of international students at universities in the United States rose by 6.4 per cent in 2001-02, despite the impact of the September 11 terrorist attacks, according to a survey by the Institute of International Education. The increase matches 2000-01 for the highest rate of growth since 1980. For the first time India overtook China as the leading country of origin, but enrolments from certain Middle Eastern countries fell.
