University of Strathclyde - African aid

A registered network of literacy teachers is to be set up in Malawi with the assistance of the University of Strathclyde. The University of Malawi is working with seven Scottish teacher training institutions, including Strathclyde, to help primary school teachers meet the challenges they face in the country, where class sizes can reach 100 pupils. Sue Ellis, reader in Strathclyde's department of childhood and primary studies, said: "In Malawi, teaching children to read and write presents particular challenges. It's not just a question of resources - teachers need to teach differently."
