The University of Malawi is a public university in Malawi, established in 1964 shortly after independence. It is one of the country’s oldest higher education institutions and forms part of the national public university system.
It originally operated as a federal system of colleges across Malawi, including Chancellor College in Zomba, The Polytechnic in Blantyre, Bunda College of Agriculture in Lilongwe, Kamuzu College of Nursing in Lilongwe and the College of Medicine in Blantyre. Several of these institutions have since become independent universities.
The university has played a major role in Malawi’s intellectual, cultural and political development and has produced many national leaders, including presidents, ministers and leading academics.
It offers programmes across humanities, sciences, law, education and social sciences, alongside postgraduate study and research.
