University of Leeds - Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery

三月 13, 2008

The University of Leeds' revamped art gallery reopened last week with a new name - the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery.

The gallery has been refurbished and expanded to include new education and research facilities thanks to a gift from Stanley and Audrey Burton, from the eponymous clothing retail business empire.

The opening exhibition will feature works from the university's art collection, which includes works by the sculptor Sir Henry Moore, the portraitist John Singer Sargent and the 19th-century French landscape painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.

The university has a long association with the Burton family. Sir Montague Burton, who founded the business, endowed a chair in international relations at the university in 1929. His eldest son, Stanley, served as a member of the university council and court and has donated works of art, museum pieces and books.
