National Primary Care Awards
The director of research and development invites applications for the second round of the following:
Primary Care Researcher Development Awards are intended to identify individuals of outstanding potential early in their primary care research careers and to "fast-track" them by supporting them in a customised research training environment. The scheme is aimed at individuals who are likely to become independent primary care research leaders in six to ten years' time. In general these are pre-doctoral awards. Primary Care Career Scientist Awards are intended to unblock the career pathways of the highest calibre individuals so that they can become independent research leaders in primary care. Candidates should be at the stage of developing their own programme of research and likely to have held high- level research posts or are able to demonstrate a substantial record in a relevant research area. Applications are welcome from non-medical clinical disciplines. A-T CHILDREN'S PROJECT
Ataxia-telangiectasia grants
The A-T Children's Project provides competitive grant awards for basic and translational research grants related to Ataxia-Telangiectasia. One and two-year projects are funded up to a maximum total direct cost of $100,000 per year. The project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of A-T. Proposals from junior investigators, from scientists in related disciplines and from individuals with innovative new ideas for A-T research are particularly encouraged, as are teams working together from industry as well as teaching universities. Fellows Program
The Einstein Institution supports research, writing and systematic reflection on nonviolent action. Its primary goal is the advancement of knowledge about the strategic uses of nonviolent action in relation to problems of political violence. The Einstein Institution
Fellows Program offers support to scholars conducting research on the history, characteristics, and potential applications of nonviolent action. Financial support is offered with the understanding that a substantive research project will be undertaken, promising to result in new knowledge. Applicants are encouraged to submit an exploratory letter to the Fellows Program Director of the Einstein Institution to assist them in clarifying their project and its relevance to the Einstein Institution Fellows Program. Heineken Prizes
These biennial prizes, offered by the Dr H. P. Heineken Foundation and the 'Alfred Heineken Fondsen' Foundation, reward outstanding scientific (scholarly) achievement in the field of biochemistry and biophysics, medicine, European history and environmental research. Along with a permanent token, each prize consists of $150,000. Nominations are restricted to individual and active scientists (scholars). Nominations must include a description of the research work and publications on which the nomination is based, a curriculum vitae, bibliography and one or two key publications. LEAKEY FOUNDATION

The Leakey Foundation was formed to further research into human origins. Recent priorities include research into the environments, archaeology, and human palaeontology of the Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene; into the behaviour, morphology and ecology of the great apes and other primate species; and into the behavioural ecology of contemporary hunter gatherers.
General Research Grants
Advanced doctoral students as well as established scientists, are eligible for general research grants. There are no citizenship restrictions. Priority for funding is given to the exploratory phases of promising new research projects. The majority of the foundation's General Research Grants to doctoral students are in the $3,000-$12,000 range; however, larger grants, especially to post-doctoral students and senior scientists, may be funded up to $20,000. Innovative Health Technologies (IHTs) Research Programme: Call For Outline Proposals (Phase 1)
In recognition of the transdisciplinary nature of the programme, this call is being issued in collaboration with the Medical Research Council. Applicants are asked to consider the extent to which their application maps onto the remit of the MRC as well as that of the ESRC. The IHTs Commissioning Panel is particularly interested in attracting interdisciplinary projects, including those where appropriate, that bring together researchers from social science and health research-based communities. Proposals may focus on new, emerging or existing technologies that are innovative in both a social and technical sense. Applicants must use only the ESRC application form and funding guidelines (available on-line). Deadline for outline applications: January 17, 2000. Deadline for full applications: April 25, 2000.
