ARTHRITIS RESEARCH CAMPAIGN. www.arc.org.uk. Project Grants.
These grants are awarded to provide support for a project designed to seek an answer to a single question or small group of related questions. The ARC will consider support of clinical projects, relating to pathogenesis, diagnosis or treatment, as well as projects of a more fundamental scientific nature, provided that they offer promise of advancement in the understanding of the rheumatic diseases. Project grants are of limited duration, usually up to a maximum of three years, and may provide for the salary of graduate or technical assistance, running costs and the purchase of small items of essential equipment. The ARC will enhance the salaries of all non-clinical postdoctoral research staff employed on project grants. Applications for major items of equipment costing in excess of Pounds 20,000 will be considered only from established units and must be applied for separately. Holders of ARC project grants are eligible to apply for travel awards either for themselves, or research staff employed on the project or working in their laboratory. Altener is the non-technology programme for the promotion of renewable energies in the European Union. Legal entities, regional and local authorities, organisations, individuals, public and private enterprises, are invited to submit proposals. To help established researchers complete and prepare for publication the results of research already begun. Approximately 30 Fellowships offered annually. Applicants must: hold or have recently held a teaching and/or research post in a university or comparable institution in the UK; have retired in the last 3 years or have retired by the time of taking up the Fellowship; be aged 59 or above at the time of retirement.
Eligible fields: all fields. Eligible duration: between 3 and 24 months. Awards to be commenced between June 1, 2000 and May 1, 2001. Eligible costs: employment of a research/clerical/secretarial assistant in direct support of work related to the project; travel and subsistence away from home for essential visits; photocopies/photographic expenses; consumables (office or laboratory). The maximum value of a Fellowship is currently Pounds 16,920.

Investigators from all stages of research career development are encouraged to apply. Up to fifty-six awards will be made under this program. ROYAL SOCIETY. www.royalsoc.ac.uk/ies/ies.htm. Joint projects between the UK and Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Applications are invited for grants for selected joint projects involving a UK group and one other group from one CEE or fSU country. The intention is to offer fixed funds over a period of two years to successful projects on a competitive basis. The programme runs for two consecutive years from April 1 each year and proposals should be restricted to projects which can be realistically completed within this time. Applications will be considered for research in the natural and applied sciences including mathematics, engineering, medicine and the scientific research aspects of psychology, archaeology, geography and the history of science. Funding of up to Pounds 4,000 per annum for two years will be provided for selected projects to enable collaborative visits to take place. The Project Leader in each team should be the most senior member of the group and of at least PhD status. National Institutes of Health. http://grants.nih.gov. Protease Inhibitor Related Atherosclerosis in HIV Infection.
The objective of this initiative is to support research on the effects of HIV protease inhibitors on lipid metabolism leading to hyperlipidemia and altered body fat distribution, the onset of insulin resistance, and the development of accelerated atherosclerosis. Solicited programs should address the possible basic mechanism(s) underlying the metabolic and hormonal alterations leading to dyslipidemias and lipodystrophy as well as insulin resistance observed in HIV-positive patients undergoing protease inhibitor treatment and the relationship between the development of these abnormal metabolic processes and the accelerated progression of atherosclerosis. The program requires investigators to engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative research focused on clinical as well as basic studies. Deadline for letters of intent: December 15.

Equipment Proposals are invited for equipment that will underpin a range of research projects across a group, a department, or more widely. Support may be requested to cover the capital cost of the equipment, the cost of installation and commissioning where this can be justified as unusually difficult or expensive, and the cost of essential staff support and running costs for a period of no more than three years. Costs of undertaking research projects using the equipment will not be supported under this arrangement, but should be requested separately under the standard responsive mode or other appropriate route.

The following Funds are available for application: W G Fearnsides Fund: to advance geological science; E J Garwood Fund: for the encouragement of research in stratigraphy, with palaeontology, and in physical geology. Must be between 28 and 51 years of age; Gloyne Outdoor Geological Research Fund: for outdoor research of a palaeontological or stratigraphical character, within the limits of the British Commonwealth; Annie Greenly Fund: for detailed geological mapping; Timothy Jefferson Field Research Fund: must be under 28 years of age; for a field project for research in Earth science; Elspeth Matthews Fund: for members of the Society for geological field-based research anywhere in the world.
Preference for those under 30 years of age; Daniel Pidgeon Fund: to promote geological original research. Must not be more than 28 years of age; J B Tyrrell Fund: to assist geologists of GB and Ireland to travel to and in Canada; or to assist in the publication of papers by geologists of GB and Ireland upon the geology of Canada; or to assist such geologists in any other way best adapted to further this object. Grants are available for Japan related projects in the subject areas of Japanese studies, the promotion of the Japanese language, the social sciences and humanities, and in the arts. They are designed to: assist Japan related research projects, seminars and symposia; facilitate the exchange of scholars, specialists in the arts, and other professionals; support Japanese studies and the teaching of the Japanese language overseas. SCOTTISH HOSPITAL ENDOWMENTS RESEARCH TRUST. www.shert.com. The Scottish Hospital Endowments Research Trust invites applications for the two-year travelling research Nasmyth Scholarship for 2000-02. The Scholarship offers a young, medically-qualified individual working in Scotland the opportunity to spend two years carrying out research at authorised institutions overseas.
The prime objective is to ensure the future of high-quality clinical research in Scotland, by providing these individuals with an opportunity for enhancement of their research training in overseas centres of excellence.
Deadline: January 21. The chosen field for the research must have clinical relevance. Support will be at a realistic level for the duration of the Scholarship.
