The McCarthy Lab has an exciting opportunity for a prospective Research Technician who is interested in synthetic biology approaches to engineer biofilms to better tackle environmental challenges. You will be joining a highly interdisciplinary project, where we will blend synthetic biology, environmental engineering, and biotechnology to develop disruptive solutions to major environmental challenges. Experience with advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. There will be a particular focus on developing approaches to harness bacterial community behaviours like biofilm formation to better tackle environmental pollutants such as waste plastics. Our aim is to leverage cutting-edge advancements in synthetic biology and biofilm engineering to develop innovative strategies for bioremediation, with a key focus on scalable solutions that can be readily adopted by the waste and water sectors. This fast-paced project will give the successful candidate the opportunity to develop new skills by working closely with our interdisciplinary team and build their international profile including through research visits to academic collaborators and working with SMEs. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate and efficient data generation, data management, collation and the reporting of results to the project lead. The post-holder will need to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, organisational, team working and communication skills and have a keen interest in drafting research outputs for peer-review publication. The successful applicant will work closely with other researchers within the McCarthy Lab and with other EBIC partners. There will also be opportunities to explore the commercial  Applicants must have a BSc or MSc in a relevant discipline. Experience and knowledge in the field of biofilm formation is essential. Experience in some or all of the following: advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. They should be enthusiastic, well motivated and be able to work both independently and collaboratively. This position is available for 32 months. About the University As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Role We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Fellow to join an exciting industry-funded applied research project within the Infocomm Technology cluster at SIT. This project addresses the critical challenge of enabling ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) with priority-aware offloading for public safety services. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end investigation of novel edge-assisted computation offloading strategies that leverages edge intelligence. The role will bridge rigorous theoretical work with hands-on offloading algorithm design and development. The core responsibility is to build and validate these offloading strategies, complete with Python application programming interfaces (APIs), through rigorous simulations and proof-of-concept (PoC) trials. This position is ideal for a researcher with a passion for solving complex problems at the intersection of wireless communications, edge computing, and machine learning, and who is eager to translate theoretical insights into practical systems. Key Responsibilities Derive and analyse closed-form mathematical expressions for latency and offloading probabilities across edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Design and develop robust Python APIs for edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Set up network testbeds integrating hardware, software, and communication protocols to validate edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Conduct rigorous simulations and live PoC trials to ensure computation offloading algorithms meets URLLC targets for public safety services. Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) to ensure all project deliverables are met. Job Requirements A Ph.D./Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Science, or a highly related discipline. A strong theoretical foundation and research background in wireless communications and edge computing. Strong publication track record in top-tier conferences and journals in the areas of wireless communications, IoT, or edge computing. Demonstrated proficiency in software API and algorithm development of edge intelligence algorithms using Python. Knowledge of machine learning or reinforcement learning techniques is highly advantageous. Experience with theoretical wireless network modelling, particularly stochastic geometry or queuing theory, is highly advantageous.

Research Fellow in Physical Oceanography

Ocean and Earth Science at the National Oceanography, Southampton (NOCS) / University of Southampton is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in Physical Oceanography to undertake research into the ocean turbulence dynamics shaping the distribution of Antarctic sea ice, and the feedbacks of ice processes on ocean stratification and circulation. The role will focus on the analysis of a range of oceanographic measurements collected in the Weddell, Amundsen and Ross seas using a range of cutting-edge instrumentation, including microstructure equipped profiling floats, autonomous underwater vehicles and specialised moorings. This analysis will be complemented by large eddy simulations of under-ice ocean turbulence, to aid in advancing observation-based process understanding. The successful applicant will work as part of an international team examining the role of a breadth of ocean turbulence phenomena in controlling Antarctic sea ice extent, and the ways in which sea ice processes shape ocean stratification and circulation. The team includes an active sea-going oceanographic group, experts in remote sensing, numerical sea ice-ocean modellers and climate dynamicists, and is strongly motivated by the ongoing rapid changes in the Antarctic sea ice cap and in the sea ice-influenced Southern Hemisphere oceans. The NOCS team will work closely with scientists at project partner institutions in the UK (e.g., British Antarctic Survey) and internationally (e.g., Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Alfred Wegener Institute, Korea Polar Research Institute). Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent in physical oceanography (or a related field) with experience in the interpretation of oceanographic observations. A good knowledge of ocean dynamics would be beneficial. Strong quantitative and communication skills, and the ability to conduct innovative research leading to high-impact publications in international refereed journals are essential.
