EUROPEAN SCIENCE FOUNDATION

1 quai Lezay-Marnesia, 67080 Strasbourg Cedex, France Tel: +33 (0)3 88 76 71 25, fax +33 (0)3 88 37 05 32 Standing Committee for the Social Sciences (SCSS) - Exploratory Research Grant Scheme Call for Proposals. The SCSS has launched a new scheme of small grants to support the development of social science research at the European level. The purpose is to offer social scientists "seed money" to build and strengthen research contacts, to test innovative ideas and to develop potential collaborative research projects. Proposals are invited which demonstrate European added value through the adoption of a comparative research approach, and address basic research issues of medium to long-term importance. While applications in any topic field which meet these general criteria are welcomed, the SCSS would be particularly interested in receiving proposals on the following topics: l Entrepreneurial Cultures in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Europe. l The Ageing of the European Population and its Socio-Economic Consequences. l Social Networks, Trust and Community Building in Europe. Applicants should be groups of social scientists based in European universities and/or research institutes. Applications must be of the highest quality and demonstrate the potential importance of European research collaboration in the chosen field. They should also indicate a transnational coordinating group of researchers who would be responsible for the project. The scheme offers grants each to a maximum value of FF 200,000. A grant will be valid for 12 months (from 1 January to 31 December 1999) and is designed to cover the costs of small workshop activities, exchanges and travel and support costs. Grants will be awarded to the university or research institute of the project leader.

Applicants should note that the award of a grant will not carry any implication that successful research collaborations would lead to further funding by the ESF. Deadline: August 31. Decisions announced in November. For further details telephone +33 (0)3 88 76 71 42. Fax:+33 (0)3 88 37 05 32. Email: beagda@ esf.org. Web: www.esf. org /social.htm A limited number of research fellowships, mainly to support visits directly relevant to the scientific programme or network and from one European country to another, are available within the following activities. Within programmes priority is given to visits involving at least one country contributing to the a la carte budget. Details available at http:// www.esf. org.

Scottish Committee considers all applications for grants for Scottish projects concerned with mental health and with learning disabilities, except for scientific research applications which are considered by the London based Scientific Research Committee. Priority will be given this year to work with young people aged 14 to 25 with either severe mental health problems or severe Learning Disabilities. General Funding Policy The MHF funds projects of a pioneering nature and targets its limited resources so that a significant contribution can be made to the improvement of services for people with mental illness or learning disabilities or to the understanding of the causes of these conditions.
