* Noel Lloyd , registrar and secretary of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, will succeed Derec Llwyd Morgan as vice-chancellor from September 1. The university's commercial and consultancy service has appointed: David Craddock , commercial and marketing manager in the Centre of Excellence for Advanced Software (a joint venture with Cardiff University) as director; Julie Finch , of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council's Institute for Animal Health, commercial manager/assistant director; and Ian Harris , programme manager at Ubiquity Software Corporation, knowledge exploitation fund entrepreneurship champion.
* Leeds University has appointed Richard Kaplan , chief of the clinical investigations branch at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, US, professor of clinical studies in the School of Medicine and associate director of the National Cancer Research Network; and Ronnier Luo , professor and director of the Colour and Imaging Institute, Derby University, chair of colour and imaging science.
* Ronald Plasterk , professor of developmental genetics at Utrecht University, and Peter Smith , professor of tropical epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, have been appointed to the Wellcome Trust board of governors.
* Mike Bushell , professor in the School of Biomedical and Life Sciences at Surrey University, has been appointed to the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council's plant and microbial sciences committee.
