Mike Pilling , head of physical chemistry at Leeds University, is to chair the government's Air Quality Expert Group .

At Cambridge University : Sir John Kingman , retiring vice-chancellor of the University of Bristol and chairman of the Statistics Commission, will become director of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the first N. M. Rothschild & Sons professor of mathematical sciences in October. He replaces Keith Moffatt , who is retiring. Jerimiah Ostriker , provost of Princeton University, has been appointed Plumian professor of astronomy and experimental philosophy from next month. Jonothon Crowcroft , professor of network systems at University College London, becomes Marconi professor of communications systems from October; Hugh Willmott , professor of organisational analysis at Manchester School of Management, becomes Diageo professor of management studies; and Zygmuntg Baranski , professor of Italian studies at the Univer-sity of Reading, becomes Serena professor of Italian.

Anne Massey , former professor in the faculty of media, arts and society at the Southampton Institute, has been appointed director of the school of design at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth .

The Construction Industry Training Board has appointed its first woman director. Sheila Hoile , director of education and professional development at the Construction Industry Council, will become CITB's director of training standards and strategy in October. She succeeds Peter Martin , who is to become chief executive of the Lantra Trust.

John O'Donoghue , research project manager for the National Information and Communications Technology Research Centre at the University of Wolverhampton has been appointed visiting professor at the University of Wollongong , Australia.
