David Southwood , of the department of physics, Imperial College, has been elected director of science of the European Space Agency .

The following have been made Teacher Training Agency board members: Eileen Baker , principal of Bishop Grosseteste College and a member of the General Teaching Council; David Kershaw , head of Coundon Court School; Barbara MacGilchrist , dean of initial teacher education at the Institute of Education; Victoria Nye, director of education at the Association of Unit Trusts and Pension Funds.

Lord (David) Currie of Marylebone has been appointed dean of City University Business School . He was deputy dean, professor of economics and a governor at London Business School.

Alistair Niven , director of literature at the British Council and visiting professor of creative writing at Sheffield Hallam University, has been appointed principal of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Foundation of St Catherine's (Cumberland Lodge) .

Alan Cummings , course director of the postgraduate programme in conservation, has been appointed pro rector at the Royal College of Art .

New pro vice-chancellors of the University of Ulster are: Jim Allen , former dean of social and health sciences (student support); Richard Barnett , former dean of business and management (teaching and learning); John Hughes , former dean of infomatics (research and development).

New deans at the university are: Robert A. Welch (art, design and humanities); Denise McAlister (business and management); Norman Black (informatics); John Wilson (social and health sciences and education); and Terri Scott (regional development).

Lord Stevenson of Coddenham , chairman of Pearson plc and of the Tate Gallery Foundation, is to be the first chancellor of the London Institute .

Valerie Sanders , reader in Victorian literature at the University of Sunderland, is to become professor of English literature at the University of Hull .

Christopher Hood , formerly of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, London, has been appointed director of the Japanese Studies Centre at Cardiff University's Business School . Paul Furlong , former reader in Italian politics at Birmingham University, has been appointed head of the School of European Studies at Cardiff .
