Six new members have been appointed to the Further Education Funding Council as it approaches transition of responsibilities to the Learning and Skills Council. They are: Alexandra Burslem, vice-chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University; Michael Frye, vice-chairman of CBI London region and deputy chairman of London First; David Gilchrist, chair of Calderdale College; Sir Nicholas Goodison, deputy chairman of Lloyds TSB Group plc; Sian Macdonald, principal of Tresham Institute and Leisha Fullick, chief executive of Islington Council. Retiring from the council are: Peter Elliott, Peter Garrod, Colin George, Mitchell Hogg, Nick Lewis and Alfred Morris.
Aldwyn Cooper, former professor of management studies at Henley Management College, has been appointed director of services at the University of Glamorgan.
Ray Wild, principal of Henley Management College, is to leave at the end of the year. His successor will be appointed in the next few months.
Julian Thomas, reader in archaeology at the University of Southampton, has been appointed professor of archaeology at the University of Manchester, replacing the late Barri Jones. He will join Manchester in the spring.
Lola Young, professor of cultural studies at Middlesex University, has been appointed to the board of the Royal National Theatre.
