John Hayward, principal of the University of Durham's Stockton campus, will take up the new full-time post of provost at Stockton on August 1. He has resigned from his post as registrar and secretary of the university. The title has been introduced to recognise growth at the campus.
Bristol University has made its first three appointments to the Collier chair in the public understanding of science and technology, set up in memory of John Collier, chairman of Nuclear Electric and a patron of the Campaign for Resource. They are: Peter Cochran, head of BT Laboratories Advanced Research; Sally Duensing, assistant director, science and museum liaison, the Exploratorium, San Francisco; and Sir Neil Cossons, director of the Science Museum in London. Each will hold the chair for a year. The university plans to attract a succession of scientists to the post, attached as fellows to the Institute for Advanced Studies.
Derek Pretty, a former director of Kwik Save Group, will be registrar of the University of Bristol from August 1. He succeeds Michael Parry.
Charles Harvey, founding director of the school of management at Royal Holloway College, University of London and an advocate of lifelong learning, has been appointed dean of the Bristol Business School at the University of the West of England from August. He will succeed acting dean Helen Valentine.
John Peace, group chief executive of the information solutions company Experian, will take over as chairman of Nottingham Trent University's board of governors in August. He succeeds Sir David White, who is retiring after ten years.
Chong Choi, former head of the department of strategy and international business at City University, has joined Cambridge University to run its MBA programme.
David Parry, director of quality assessment at the Teacher Training Agency and former deputy director of the quality assurance group of the Higher Education Quality Council, has been appointed dean of the academic quality service at Southampton Institute.
Peter Mitchell, senior policy officer at the Trades Union Congress, has become London regional official for the Association of University Teachers. He replaces Sally Hunt, who is taking on more of a policy role.
