Richard de Friend, former pro-vice-chancellor at the University of Kent, joins the College of Law as director of its London branch at Store Street. He will be joined by Paulene Collins, who leaves her post as chief training officer at the Law Society to become professor and head of staff development and training at the college.

Steve Molyneux, IBM professor of interactive communication technologies at the University of Wolverhampton, has been appointed to assist the Lord Chancellor's department develop new ways to use information technology to improve the efficiency of the British judicial system.

Anna Dominiczak, British Heart Foundation professor of cardiovascular medicine at Glasgow University, has been awarded a British Heart Foundation personal chair. She will head a team of ten world-class researchers in cardiovasuclar medicine for at least the next five years.

Ron Emanuel, former director of quality assurance at the University of Glasgow, has been elected to the new post of vice-principal, learning and teaching.

Norman A. Jacobs, director of the National Centre for Training and Education in Prosthetics and Orthotics, has been elected president of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics, which acts as consultant for the United Nations and the World Health Organisation on artificial limb development.

Ray Donnelly, founder and chairman of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, has been appointed Liverpool John Moores University professor of lung cancer studies.

Professor John Bynner, director of the social statistics research unit at City University. will join the Institute of Education as director of the new centre for longitudinal studies next month. He will bring to the institute the 1958 and 1970 British birth cohort studies, which include data on every child born in a certain week in those years.

At the institute's centre for longitudinal studies Bynner will be joined by Professor Heather Joshi, the deputy director of City University's statistics unit.

John Hinnells, who held professorships at the University of Manchester and School of African and Oriental Studies, has been appointed by the University of Derby as research professor in comparative religion. His speciality is Zoroastrian religion.
