Honorary Degrees 2001:
HonLLD: Rt Hon Sir Edward Heath was prime minister from 1970-74. He has just retired after serving as an MP for over 50 years and was the longest serving MP in the last House of Commons.
HonDMus: Jools Holland is an internationally renowned pianist, bandleader and broadcaster. He is a long term resident of the London Borough of Greenwich.
HonLLM: David Michael is a detective inspector in the Metropolitan Police Service. He was a founder member of the Black Police Association and chaired the association from 1995-97.
HonDSc: General Sir John Stibborn was the Chief Royal Engineer from 1993-99. He was also the former Commandant of the Royal Military College of Science and Master General of the Ordnance; Dr Keith Warren was a governor of the university from 1989 to 2000 and became Vice-Chairman of the Court of Governors in 1994 and Pro-Chancellor 1997. He is a graduate of Woolwich Polytechnic; John Pelling was president of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Building Surveyors Divisional Council and founding President of the AEEBC (Association d'Experts Européens du Bâtiment et de la Construction); Hilary Samson-Barry was Head of Health Development for the NHS Executive in the London region and is now head of Health and Strategy Integration for the Greater London Authority.
HonDLitt: Peter Riddell is assistant editor of The Times newspaper. He has been a political columnist there since 1991 and is a regular broadcaster; Dr Joan Thirsk , retired reader in Economic History at the University of Oxford, is a distinguished economic and social historian.

The Annual Prize for the promotion of Equality of Opportunity 2001 has been awarded to Ian Rivers , a lecturer in psychology at the College of Ripon and York St. John, for his work on tackling homophobia.

Calum Macleon , consultant in social and economic development for Blake Stevenson Ltd; David Halsall , specialist in transport geography, retired from Edge Hill in May 2000; David Malcolm , professor of English Literature at the Institute of English Philology, University of Gdansk, Poland; Ludmilla Kostova , associate professor in the department of English, University of Veliko, Turnovo, Bulgaria.
University of Southampton
The new head of development at the university is Paul Dryden , who has spent the last six years fundraising for Oxford University, after working for seven years in fund management in the City. He was responsible for a series of development projects at Oxford, including the refurbishment and extension of the Museum of the History of Science, the building of two extensions to the University Physiology Laboratory, the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (OPTIMA), the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and the University Museum.
University of Ulster
Gerry Burns , has been appointed pro-chancellor of the university; his term of appointment commences on 1 October 2001. A former parliamentary ombudsman for Northern Ireland, Mr. Burns is currently chairman of the Review Body on Post-Primary Education.

Joanna Cannon and Katie Scott , lecturers at the Courtauld Institute of Art; Clyve Jones , assistant librarian at the Institute of Historical Research; Alan Thacker , executive editor of the Victoria County History at the Institute of Historical Research.
Dunstan Ward , lecturer in English at the British Institute in Paris has been promoted to senior lecturer from September 1.
Helen Xanthaki , research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, has been promoted to senior research fellow from October 1.
