Only half reach grade C in GCSE maths
Record numbers of pupils have passed their GCSEs, but more than 40 per cent of all candidates are still failing to achieve grades A to C in core subjects such as English and maths. In all, 57.1 per cent of awards were at grades A to C this year compared with 56.6 last year. But 49.9 per cent of candidates failed to pass maths at A to C and 41.5 per cent failed to gain these grades in English.
De Montfort governors finalise sale of campus
De Montfort University’s board of governors was meeting today to finalise plans to sell off the university’s Lincolnshire campus to the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. The move is part of De Montfort’s strategy to reduce its number of sites from ten to two by next year.
Lewisham student gains Cambridge place
Jamaican-born Susi Henry has become the first A-level student from Lewisham College to gain a place at Cambridge University. Susi, 20, who is to study law at Emmanuel College, moved from St Mary, Jamaica, two years ago to stay with her aunt in Deptford while she studied in Lewisham, which is recognised as one of the most disadvantaged areas in the United Kingdom.
