Professor killed in Pentagon attack plane
Associated Press named Georgetown University professor, Leslie A. Whittington, as being among the passengers who died on the hijacked American Airlines flight used in the attack on the Pentagon.

Scots aid stranded air passengers
Universities today rallied to the aid of passengers stranded in the wake of the US terror attacks. Dundee University and Glasgow Caledonian University officials offered student residences as accommodation to travellers whose planes were diverted to Glasgow airport yesterday.

AS-level exams to be streamlined
Plans to streamline the AS levels to be sat by pupils next summer were welcomed today by education secretary Estelle Morris. Pupils will sit three exams in a single three-hour session. Ms Morris said: “This is good news for both students and teachers, whose burden will be significantly reduced.”

Minister welcomes research framework
The new national framework for education research was today welcomed by adult skills minister John Healey. Under the framework, a panel will be established to predict future research needs. Researchers will also develop better ways of identifying priorities. A funders’ forum will be set up to ensure value for money.

Broken-home children need grandparents
Children are less emotionally damaged by their parents’ separation if they have a close relationship with their grandparents, research shows. The study of more than 460 youngsters was carried out by researchers from King’s College London for the Joseph Rowntree foundation.

Maggot research pinpoints time of death
The British police will be able to establish murder victims’ time of death more accurately thanks to entomological research. Sarah Donovan, of London’s Natural History Museum, has established key variations in the rate that maggots from different parts of the world develop. Until now, the United Kingdom has depended on data from North America and Austria.
